Rachel studied Illustration & Graphic Design at Salford University and exhibited at New Designers in 2016.

After a successful entry to Gifted? competition, Rachel worked in the Hallmark design studio as a Studio Technician for 2 months before being asked to join the Tesco team on a 2 week placement last November. Rachel made quite an impression, and subsequently moved into a full-time Designer position within the team.

How would you describe yourself in three words?

Smiley, Sweet and Adventurous!

What has been your biggest achievement since starting here?

I started at Hallmark on a two week placement for the Tesco team and since then I haven’t left! I became a studio technician right after my placement which was such a surprise and it was great fun. Within two months of being on the Studio Technician Team, I got promoted to a Designer. I still can’t believe my luck! This has got to be my biggest achievement to date, I’ve always wanted to get a job that I love!

What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced?

Learning the whole process of how cards are made from start to finish. I had no idea what went on behind the scenes of all the lovely stuff that is created here at Hallmark! As a designer now, I’m getting the chance to do that myself and so far it has been mind boggling! It’s so amazing to see something come from a little idea and grow into a beautiful design and product that’s going to be out there for the world to see!

What advice would you give new designers wanting to break into the industry?

Work hard, give it all you’ve got! Be different, and explore with different ways to create your work. It’s great to have a bit of variety. Also, have a lovely Instagram or blog to get yourself out there, show off how talented you are!

What would your superpower be?

The ability to make lovely things grow! Plants, creatures, fruit, veg? Everything! We could do with a lot more beautiful things in the world and an endless supply of strawberries. Yum!
